history of pilates

Joseph Pilates was born in 1880 in Germany. His father was a prize-winning gymnast of Greek ancestry and his mother worked as a naturopath (complementary medicines).
Pilates was a sickly child and suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever, and he dedicated his entire life to improving his physical strength.
Besides skiing frequently he began studying body-building, yoga and gymnastics. By the age of 14 he was fit enough to pose for anatomical charts.
Pilates came to believe that the "modern" life-style, bad posture and inefficient breathing lay at the roots of poor health.
He ultimately devised a series of exercises and training techniques and engineered all the equipment, specifications, and tuning required to teach his methods properly.

our clients testimonials

"Massive thanks to Julie Trinder of Wantage Pilates. She has looked after me through my accident and has provided me with such care and expertise. If you have any pain get to Wantage Pilates."

I am late 60’s and know how important it is to keep flexible, supple and to enhance ones balance. The Wantage Pilates classes are run with enthusiasm and a deep knowledge of how Pilates works on the body. The environment is friendly and  stimulating, and everyone’s special concerns are taken into consideration

“Julia is an  excellent Instructor. The sessions offer an infinite variety of  exercises to reach parts of the body I did not know existed”

“Following hip and back surgery I was left with poor mobility, weakness and a total lack  of confidence. Julia and her Team  at Wantage Pilates have worked miracles. My muscle tone is back and I have my confidence back. Thank you for all your hard work.”

Since joining Wantage Pilates  I have been able to strengthen my back aftermajor surgery and not needed any treatment from my Chiropractor. He has  visited the Studio and endorses the work being done here”

“Noticing a real difference in my shape changing and core stability. Less back pain than  usual and the main thing for me is at 36 years old I have had a very  weak pelvic floor! To the point of running a definite ‘no no’, not to mention jumping. But doing this programme has changed that for the better! I am a lot more conscious of my posture and pelvic floor. I have had no more ‘accidents’ when sneezing or coughing, so that to me is worth its weight in gold”
